Book Adaptations

Trinsic and Mario,

Sorry to interrupt your privacy and add myself to said tribe, in a funny sort of way I feel like the third wheel. I could find no other tribe on screen writing and I am much interested in the subject.

In last 4 years two trilogies have been produced from immensely popular books. I speak of the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. As a LOTR fan I felt most of the movie's story alterations were poor decesions, not an improvement in the movie experience. However when voicing this opinion I was quickly barraged with replies like

"you cannot compare books to movies, they are two totally different meida".

Well I haven't written a book or a movie so I couldn't refute this postulate. True they are two totally different media, but I've always felt story is story, you might tell it different but it is the same themes and structure underneath. However after seeing all 3 Harry Potter movies I know now it is possible to successfully translate books to the big screen with virtually no alterations (at least for some novels).

Question:

What aspects of Novels are the most difficult to translate to film? These are the aspects which require modification in writing a screen play.

Hi,
I am part of an established writing group that is looking for one or two writers, prefereably female to flesh out our group. We average 6-8 writers. We currently meet on Wednesday evenings from 7-10:30ish in Los Angeles. The eveneing and specific location is up for debate depending on the spread of the group. We generally work it around food so people can come directly from work. No booze so we can all be sharp through the evening. We are very committed and professional. Most of us have been in the same group for 5+ years. We all read new pages every week if we have them and we show regardless. Not a personality contest, the critisism is focussed and direct. We are all about making our work the best it can be. We would need to read a writing sample as we are trying to maintain the same professional level we are already working at. It is a powerful group. I like where your going with the group script... reminds me of the notebooks that were left in San Francisco. I'm a young writer with two feature length scripts under my belt but I'm always looking for inspiration. I haven't sold anything but I've pitched twice. what direction should I attack this from?

Okay people, I'm in developement of a story with someone that wants to do a redemption story of a mid-age man seeking to reclaim his fatherhood with his teenage daughter. I'm at a loss at the moment in deciding from what perspective and background this story is going to be founded upon.

I'm thinking as of right now, a latent homosexual man abandons his wife and young child to seek out his true sexual orientation. But in his mid-age, he reflects on his decision and wants to reconnect with his maturing daughter.

Here's the PROBLEM: I'm not sure how to initiate his return? What brings him back? Why? And what struggles will him and his daughter embark on together?

Help!

Setting: a Future Metropolis.
Year: 2061
Planet: Earth.
Politics: Global, under control of Mega Corporations
Duration: Six Months
Level of conflict: Extreme political uprising. Global citizens are locked into an internal war over destruction of free thinking on planet earth. The Global Government has put the interests of corporations before the citizens of earth. Speaking out or forming any kind of uprising against capitalism is a capital offense with extreme penalties, such as life in prison or a mind wipe, becoming a lifetime worker of the offending corporation.

Political parties have divided into two groups. Cooperates and the Freewill Society. The Free will society is a splinter group that is underground trying to ralley change in the people of the world. They support a handful of government officials that support the cause and are secretly promoting bills that will hamper the efforts of corporations to gain complete control over the political system; something must be done at all costs.

The Corporations have near control over world government and use it to write laws that restrict freedoms outside of the work environment citing monetary concerns, to stifle criticism of the people. The use surveillance technology and mind altering techniques to slow down the free thinkers, but it?s an uphill battle.

INT. CITIUMS CONDO - NIGHT

We are in a small dimly lit one room apartment about the size of a jail cell. MICHALE CITIUM a man in his thirties with short brown hair is in bed fast asleep. As we get closer to the bed we see a computer display at the head.
A line travels across the screen at regular intervals and spikes at the center.

Citium begins to toss and turn. We get closer to citiums face. He turns his head toward us still asleep.

He opens his mouth in shock, and then closes it. He mouths the words "NO!"
